Jonathan Bratter | Street Photographer
I was almost about to say: Could Street Photography be clinical? Then paused, then I realised I am past it. I believe the moment when realised that our next in feature is a Physician from Miramar, Florida caused it. No no, we are not talking medicine at all. I am only reminiscing the thought that often crosses my mind: Can Street photography make us a better person? Dr. Jonathan Bratter opened up his thoughts and his image library with us. He has a certain monochrome style that will stay etched in your mind even after you are done seeing. Let's dive into the interview that happened.
Jonathan, how would you define your style of street photography?
Jonathan: Documenting people and their stories.
Why and when did street photography become your THE thing? What exactly inspired you?
Jonathan: In High school, I had an internship as a photographer at the Miami Herald. While I knew it wouldn’t be my career path, that solidified my interest in using this media to document and tell a story.
Jonathan, what is more important to you - the people or the surroundings?
Jonathan: People.
When you look deep within, did street photography change you?
Jonathan: Definitely keeps me aware of my surroundings.
Do you follow any composition technique by the books?
Jonathan: No.

Jonathan: Family!
Is street photography your primary source of bread & butter?
Jonathan: No, I am a physician.

Jonathan: Every day, I miss so many shots every day!
Which camera(s) do you use? And what about your lenses and other accessories?
Jonathan: I am a Leica guy.
Which other street photographers’ work inspires you the most?
Jonathan: Joel Myerowitz.
What is your word of caution to amateur street photographers?
Jonathan: Don’t overstep.
What NOT TO DO in street photography?
Jonathan: I do not photograph the unhoused without expressed consent.
