Here's a quick opportunity to gaze into how Gurudas is thinking behind his lenses, and beyond 'em.
What is more important to you, the people or the surroundings?
Gurudas : People are more important to me, as their emotions, stories, and interactions bring life and depth to the surroundings, creating powerful narratives in my photography.

Gurudas, how would you define your style of street photography?
Gurudas : My style of street photography focuses on storytelling through candid moments, blending vibrant emotions, cultural essence, and the beauty of everyday life to create meaningful and compelling visuals.
Why and when did street photography become your THE thing? What exactly inspired you?
Gurudas : Street photography became my passion during the lock-down in my village. Capturing the stories and memories of my childhood, I realised the beauty in everyday life. Travelling and connecting with people inspire me to uncover unique stories that make this genre truly fascinating.

Is there anything beyond that camera for a street photographer ?
Gurudas : For a street photographer, beyond the camera lies curiosity, empathy, and a deep connection with the world. It’s about observing life, building stories, and engaging with people and their cultures. The ability to see beauty in the ordinary, patience to wait for the right moment, and the courage to step into unknown spaces are just as important as the equipment in hand.
Is street photography your primary source of bread & butter?
Gurudas : No.
Which camera(s) do you use? And what about your lenses and other accessories?
Gurudas : iPhone 13

What is your word of caution to amateur street photographers?
Gurudas :
Respect Privacy Be courteous, seek consent in sensitive situations, and respect people's boundaries.
Honour Cultures Learn local norms to ensure your photography respects traditions.
Stay Ethical Capture authentic stories with integrity, preserving the dignity of your subjects.
Do you believe that street photographers are travel photographers too?
Gurudas : Yes

What is your perspective on the relationship between Street Photography and Street documentary?
Gurudas : Street photography and street documentary are closely related but differ in intent. Street photography focuses on capturing candid, artistic, and often fleeting moments, emphasising aesthetics and emotion. Street documentary, on the other hand, seeks to tell a deeper, structured story, documenting societal or cultural aspects over time. While both rely on the streets as their canvas, street photography is more spontaneous, while street documentary is purpose-driven and narrative-focused.
Any location that you dream to cover next? Or any place that you would want to revisit?
Gurudas : The streets of Kolkata!
Yes, we can't agree more on the "Kolkata" expression! Gurudas, what makes you say “Wow!” when you see some other street photographers’ work? (and the reverse)
Gurudas : Composition.

That is Gurudas Bate, for you guys, with sparkle in his eyes and as candid as he chooses to be!
