Marko Buntić
In SPG's 7th installment of the interview series we are introducing Marko Buntić. The Croatian street photographer, with an eye for capturing the raw essence of urban life, with a distinct touch and style of his own and capable of presenting a compelling narrative through his striking black-and-white imagery. Tell us Marko, why and when did street photography become your THE thing? What exactly inspired you?
Marko : I was always interested in street photography, started shooting in the street year 2012
How would you define your style of street photography?
Marko : Mostly candid photography
What is more important to you, the people or the surroundings?
Marko : People
Marko, what would be your top list of tricks to succeed as a street photographer? Share some tips for people who are starting out on street photography..
Marko : Always try to blend in when shooting in the streets
Marko, when you look deep within, did street photography change you?
Marko : Yes.
Tell us Marko, for a street photographer, what is beyond that camera?
Marko : I look for interesting people, street artists and musicians.
Is street photography your primary source of bread & butter?
Marko : No.
Out of your own work, pick the top three. Tell us the story behind those shots.
Marko : The first one would be the documentation of the beautiful violin sound, shot in Belgrade, I am always drawn to street musicians, so I have noticed this old man playing a violin and this stays as one of my top picks.
Marko : My next pick would be the sound of the Asfalth, shot in Sarajevo.
Marko : "Waiting": I shot this one on the streets of Milano, beautiful girl who looks like she is waiting for someone.
Any shot you think that you may have missed and you must have taken?
Marko : Yes
Which camera(s) do you use? And what about your lenses and other accessories?
Marko : I used to shoot with Olympus E-520, which I have replaced with Olympus OMD EM1 markII. Lenses Sigma 30mm f1.4, Panasonic Vario 14-45, Olympus Zuico 42-150mm
Which other street photographers’ work inspires you the most?
Marko : Henri Cartier-Bresson
What NOT TO DO in street photography?
Marko : Dont get in the face of someone.
Do you believe that street photographers are travel photographers too?
Marko : Not necessarily
What is your perspective on the relationship between Street Photography and Street documentary?
Marko : It is a close relation. Every Street photo is a sort of a documentation of life on the street
Do you follow any composition techniques, by the books?
Marko : Rule of thirds, if I can use it.
Any location that you dream to cover next? Or any place that you would want to revisit?
Marko : Any of the big European Cities
What makes you say “Wow!” when you see some other street photographers’ work? (and the reverse)
Marko : When the photo has its story!
